Title: Social Security Spousal Benefits
Post by: mloved on January 30, 2016, 08:45:19 PM
I wasn't aware of the social security spousal benefits until my sis who didn't have 40 credits, took it on her husband's when she was 62.  It doesn't affect the amt he gets.  She gets half of his amt minus a percentage because she took it before her Full Retirement Age (FRA) of 66.

If a person is on SSDI, their spouse can take spousal benefits as early as 62.  I think the amt is 65% of half the amt, but if taken at age 66 will be the full half.  Or under age 62 and caring for a child (under age 16 or disabled) of the retired or disabled worker.  I didn't look too far into this so please correct if this is wrong.

But this post is actually about the spousal file and suspend option that is about to end this year.

My other sis took it on her husband's when she reached 66.  She gets half of his monthly amt, monthly.  He continues to get his full amt.  She had filed at her FRA, then suspended, and continues working her full time job until she's 70, then she'll switch and collect on her own record.

A ruling was recently passed that will go into effect at the end of April 2016 that will end the file and suspend spousal option.  It is suggested that those who want to take that option to do so ahead of the deadline.  It won't end for those already on it - it just won't be available after the deadline.

Sorry if I wrote this all confusing as my head is so cog/fog.  Spinning

So, basically, if one is to be able to collect a part SSDI based on a spouse's previous income and keep working in order to collect their own full at some point, now is the time to take advantage of it.  Thank you for mentioning it to everyone.  I have no idea if anyone posting has this situation right now but I'll bet some folks who come through here would love this information!
